Hemorrhoid Causes, Pain and Medication

By Stacy Foster

As far as hemorrhoid causes, hemorrhoids have been found to be associated with constipation, straining while trying to have a bowel movement, cirrhosis (or alcoholism), improper or heavy lifting, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and venous stasis associated with pregnancy.

To prevent and alleviate hemorrhoids and hemorrhoid pain, as well as counteracting hemorrhoid causes, the following dietary guidelines are suggested:

*Increase fiber - this will promote bowel elimination and decrease constipation. Increase your consumption of vegetables, legumes, fruit, and grains.

*Increase water to at least 10 full glasses daily. Avoid coffee, sodas, and caffeine-containing beverages as they create vessel constriction and can prevent absorption of nutrients.

*Address any possible food allergies or intolerances - these can create irritation of the mucosal lining. Food allergies develop as a result of eating the same foods over and over again. Common food allergies are corn, wheat, dairy, eggs and sugar.

*Consider taking probiotics - these will replenish your normal bowel flora which is commonly disrupted through intake of antibiotics.

*Eliminate fried foods and trans fatty acids or hydrogenated fats - these include butter, cow's milk, commercial peanut butter, red meat, and dairy products.

*Increase consumption of prunes - these are a natural means of promoting normal and easily passed bowel movements.

If you are looking for immediate hemorrhoid pain relief, in lieu of hemorrhoid medication, the following may be of use:

*Grated raw potatoes or apples can be applied directly to the area of hemorrhoid pain to ease swelling and pain.

*Baking soda can be applied externally, wet or dry, to relieve hemorrhoid itching.

*Witch hazel can be applied directly to the hemorrhoid pain area, which can reduce swelling and curb bleeding.

*Sitz baths - alternating hot water for 3 minutes with cold water for 30 seconds. Perform this for 20 minutes, 3 times a day. Be sure to end with the cold water.

*Red rose petals - crushed into a poultice and applied directly to the hemorrhoid pain area can reduce pain and swelling.

Hemorrhoids may effect as many as one third of Americans. As the American diet continues to worsen with the onslaught of fast food restaurants and already prepared packaged meals, this number is likely to increase. The best way to deal with hemorrhoid pain, and avoid having to use hemorrhoid medication is by avoiding hemorrhoid causes and preventing them. The best way to prevent them is to avoid becoming constipated by eating a high-fiber diet and drinking plenty of fresh nonalcoholic and non caffeinated beverages.
